In the Navy, moving up to a higher rank is referred to as advancement. The formal event that publicly recognizes that milestone is called an advancement ceremony. This ceremony marks the sailor’s attainment of the next rank and often includes the presentation of official orders and the donning or pinning of the new insignia to signify the promotion. While people might casually say “promotion ceremony,” the Navy’s official term for the recognition ceremony is advancement ceremony. A pinning ceremony is related because it involves placing the insignia, but it isn't the overall recognition event itself, and a recognition ceremony by itself is too general to denote promotion.
