Understanding Navy rating abbreviations is key here. Quartermaster is the deck and navigation specialist on a ship, handling steering under the conning officer, plotting courses, and maintaining navigational equipment and charts. The standard two-letter abbreviation used for this rating is QM, which you'll see on uniforms, rosters, and navigation watches. The other codes correspond to different ratings—for example, MU is typically a musician, YN is Yeoman (administrative clerical work), and ST is Steelworker (hull and shipboard construction tasks). So QM is the correct shorthand for Quartermaster.
